Maternal Child Health
Formerly The Shoreline Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program, ESDHD Nurturing Families Network is an evidence based, statewide service provided through the Office Of Early Childhood.
Who is Home Visiting For?
Nurturing Families Network is a FREE service for pregnant women or women who just had a baby in the towns of East Haven, West Haven, Branford, North Branford, Milford and other towns as needed. We also support fathers who are expecting a child or just had a baby. Click here to watch a home visit with one of our staff.
Why Home Visiting?
Nurturing Families Network Parent Educators provide weekly home visits, pregnancy and parenting education, developmental screenings, fatherhood support, monthly workshops and connections to resources in the community. Services are offered up until the child turns five years old.
Home visiting efforts are shown to:
- Improve the health of the child and the mother
- Prevent child injuries, child abuse and maltreatment
- Reduce emergency department visits
- Improve school readiness and achievement
- Reduce crime and domestic violence
- Improve family economic self-sufficiency
- Improve the coordination and referrals to other community resources and supports
Well-trained parent educators use the Parents as Teachers approach and curriculum with an emphasis on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being.
Our Father Parent Educator supports fathers with additional curriculums, including 24/7 Dad and Doctor Dad, to help fathers learn about baby basics, manhood, and what it means to be a dad.
We support families with building protective factors such as parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need and knowledge of parenting and child development including physical, social and emotional. These skills build stronger families that give children the best start in life.
ESDHD's Nurturing Families Network is currently located at the East Shore District Health Department 688 E Main St. Branford, CT 06405, the East Haven Adult Learning Center at 290 Dodge Ave. East Haven, CT 06512 and the West Haven Health Department at 355 Main St. West Haven, CT 06516.
