Housing Code Enforcement

The Health District maintains minimum housing standards by enforcing sections of the Connecticut General Statutes (CT General Statutes Section 47a-52c) that pertain to housing. The district also enforces the Town of East Haven Local Housing Code. Housing statutes and codes regulate rented dwelling units for compliance with general sanitary conditions, heating, property maintenance, working appliances, plumbing, sewage disposal, water supply, drainage, electric and lighting, ventilation, overcrowding, and solid waste storage and removal. Housing statutes and codes provide for responsibilities of the landlords and tenants to adequately maintain rented properties. Any tenant within the district who occupies a dwelling with potential housing code violations should try to get the condition(s) corrected by communicating with his/her landlord. If the condition then remains unresolved, a complaint may be issued with the health district.
